One of the ways in which this election cycle has had of slagging secular and nontheist voters is with the obnoxious term “values voters,” which is very clearly meant to refer to religious voters, ones mostly concerned with various “moral” issues — terrifying things like teenagers having sex, nipples on TV and those horrible, nasty gay people out to enslave America in their Satan-induced leather fetish cult.
Yeah, I’m not impressed with “values voters.” The values talked about seem rather shallow, or stupid, or downright hateful.
Worse, though, is the implication that secular voters have no values. Only religious people can care about something like values! Ya know what? Fuck you. We do, too, dinks. So neener neener.
And as everybody’s favorite Friendly Atheist points out, the Secular Coalition for America has a new site: Secular Values Voters. You can read about the 5 key values they are pushing for here. They positively aren’t having any fits about what consenting adults do in their bedrooms.
