Sick of the silence

Why Weren’t Atheists Invited to the Democratic National Committee’s Interfaith Gathering? | Friendly Atheist.

This post was one of several things I’ve read this morning that succeeded in pissing me off. I’ve read of several outrageous bits of anti-nonbeliever prejudice (Hemant’s post contains one of those), anti-gay stuff, you name it. And as I stewed over Hemant’s post, and stewed even more as I went to the Colorado Spings Gazette article and read the whole, hate-filled piece, I realized what, more than anything, is bugging me: the silence.

I’m sick of it. And my finger is pointed directly at all the Christians, Jews, Muslims and other believers out there. All you nice ones, the ones that say you have no problem with nonbelievers, who say live and let live, who say that you believe nonbelievers can be good people, too. Right now, I’m really, really pissed with you. Because you’re silent. The DNC creates a deliberately exclusionary event for the Convention and you do what, exactly? Cover your ears, cover your eyes, cover your lips. Vitriolic trash like the Gazette piece is published, and you do what, exactly? Cover your ears, cover your eyes, cover your lips.

The fact is, every invited speaker at the “Interfaith” service should be refusing to participate until it is replaced with a truly inclusive event. The fact is, every Democrat whould be flooding the party with calls and emails and letters protesting the deliberate snub of part of the party. But it isn’t happening. People don’t care. They don’t care about that, they don’t care about hate-filled crap like the Gazette piece. They don’t care if nonbelievers are excluded and denied a voice.
