YouTube – Carl Sagan – A thousand years of darkness.
A Sunday Sagan moment for you, a passionate plea for the importance of science being open to the masses, a part of everyone’s birthright. It includes a remembrance of one of the most remarkable women of antiquity, Hypatia. I have a particular fondness for Hypatia, who was one of the last glimmers of classical brilliance and scholarship; and I have a particular hatred for St. Cyril, her executioner. Certainly, I cannot have any respect whatsover for institutions that still officially proclaim his holiness and sainthood.
