“Just”

“Just” can be a magical word. Only “but” is more powerful.*
The magic goes something like this: add “just” to whatever you’re talking about, and you radically change that thing into a pallid, vaporous nothing, easily dismissed. For example, consider this sentence: “You can’t possibly believe that all we are is just matter.”
